Psalm 119:49-56 (NRSV)
Remember your word to your servant,
in which you have made me hope.
This is my comfort in my distress,
that your promise gives me life.
The arrogant utterly deride me,
but I do not turn away from your law.
When I think of your ordinances from of old,
I take comfort, O LORD.
Hot indignation seizes me because of the wicked,
those who forsake your law.
Your statutes have been my songs
wherever I make my home.
I remember your name in the night, O LORD,
and keep your law.
This blessing has fallen to me,
for I have kept your precepts.
Reflect
David spent many years with no permanent home, running from Saul who was trying to kill him. In Psalm 119 he says, “Your statues have been my songs wherever I make my home.” He was constantly on the move, but still kept God’s laws and sang about them. God gave him hope, comforted him when he was in distress, and God’s promises gave him life. David realized that he had been blessed because he kept God’s precepts. God referred to David as a man after his own heart.
This psalm gives me comfort. I do have a home, but the world around me is often crazy. People who are close to me frequently face extreme temptations. I often turn to the words of David for comfort. Scripture gives me comfort, hope, and promises of blessings and God’s constant love. I just need to be still and take the time to read my Bible to listen to God’s words for me.
Pray
Dear Lord, thank you for the blessing of the scriptures. Thank you for examples of what you want from me. You sought out David, a man after your own heart. Teach me to have a heart like yours. Thank you for giving me hope, comforting me when I am in distress, and promising me an abundant life. Amen.
Go with God.
