Luke 12:41-48

Peter said, “Lord, are you telling this parable for us or for everyone?” And the Lord said, “Who then is the faithful and prudent manager whom his master will put in charge of his slaves, to give them their allowance of food at the proper time? Blessed is that slave whom his master will find at work when he arrives. Truly I tell you, he will put that one in charge of all his possessions. But if that slave says to himself, ‘My master is delayed in coming,’ and if he begins to beat the other slaves, men and women, and to eat and drink and get drunk, the master of that slave will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour that he does not know, and will cut him in pieces, and put him with the unfaithful. That slave who knew what his master wanted, but did not prepare himself or do what was wanted, will receive a severe beating. But the one who did not know and did what deserved a beating will receive a light beating. From everyone to whom much has been given, much will be required; and from the one to whom much has been entrusted, even more will be demanded.

Reflect

God has blessed each of us with resources such as time, talents, gifts, and finances. These resources are given to us with the expectation that we will develop, nurture, and share them for the betterment of God’s Kingdom.

The resources God has so graciously given to us are not our own. They are meant to match our passions with the world’s needs. If we use God’s gifts and talents for God’s Kingdom, more will be given to us.

I don’t know about you, but that frightens me a bit. Questions arise such as, “Can I actually do what God is calling me to do?” “How much can I give before my well runs dry?”

The answer to the first question is a resounding NO. On my own I cannot do what God is calling me to do, but God can use me as an instrument to carry out the work of the Kingdom. The second question is a little harder for me to answer. I’ve experienced burnout, but I’ve also learned how to overcome it. When I approach that point, I remind myself that as a child of God I am filled with the power of the Holy Spirit and specifically gifted to play a unique and valued role in God’s Kingdom. No one is without gift or purpose; it’s how we use those gifts that determines just how much more God will abundantly bless us.

Pray

Holy God, thank you for the resources you have so freely bestowed upon us. Help us to use them to your glory and for the betterment of your Kingdom. Help us to remember that all great things come from you. Amen.
