Mark10:17-22 (NRSV)
As he was setting out on a journey, a man ran up and knelt before him, and asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: ’You shall not murder; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; You shall not defraud; Honor your father and mother.’” He said to him, “Teacher, I have kept all these since my youth.” Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said, “You lack one thing; go, sell what you own, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.” When he heard this, he was shocked and went away grieving, for he had many possessions.
Reflect
Sometimes when we ask questions, we don’t always get the answers we want. Undoubtedly, this man had not expected the answer he received from Jesus. Jesus told him to sell everything and give to the poor, not because it was the one thing he lacked, but so that he could discover what he lacked—a relationship with God.
We can have a relationship with God only by following Jesus—not by keeping the commandments or any other human action. Jesus invites us to be his disciples: “Break free! Let go of your stuff! Follow me! I believe you can do it!” Such is the peril, and the promise, of being met by Jesus!
Pray
Loving Jesus, you are calling me to follow you. May I divest myself of all that would deter me from a meaningful relationship with you. Amen.
Go with God.
