Psalm 138 (NRSV)
I give you thanks, O LORD, with my whole heart;
before the gods I sing your praise;
I bow down toward your holy temple
and give thanks to your name for your steadfast love and your faithfulness;
for you have exalted your name and your word
above everything.
On the day I called, you answered me,
you increased my strength of soul.
All the kings of the earth shall praise you, O LORD,
for they have heard the words of your mouth.
They shall sing of the ways of the LORD,
for great is the glory of the LORD.
For though the LORD is high, he regards the lowly;
but the haughty he perceives from far away.
Though I walk in the midst of trouble,
you preserve me against the wrath of my enemies;
you stretch out your hand,
and your right hand delivers me.
The LORD will fulfill his purpose for me;
your steadfast love, O LORD, endures forever.
Do not forsake the work of your hands.
Reflect
When I read this psalm I am reminded of the strength and beauty of our God. God is so big, so powerful, and so full of glory that it may sometimes feel as if we are insignificant. When we are burdened by our responsibilities, worried about our circumstances, or confused about our choices, we may wonder if God is also a loving God.
The psalmist was experiencing trouble, but in the midst of that trouble he could see that the Lord was also full of kindness, faithfulness, and love. This all-powerful, all-knowing, ever-present God really wants to help us. The psalmist praised the Lord with the confidence that God was in control. What a relief! Even when circumstances seem impossible, we do not have to despair. God is good.
Pray
Lord, help me to trust you even when things seem hopeless. Remind me of your strength. Remind me of your love. In the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
Go with God.
