Luke 8:4-10 (NRSV)
When a great crowd gathered and people from town after town came to him, he said in a parable: “A sower went out to sow his seed; and as he sowed, some fell on the path and was trampled on, and the birds of the air ate it up. Some fell on the rock; and as it grew up, it withered for lack of moisture. Some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew with it and choked it. Some fell into good soil, and when it grew, it produced a hundredfold.” As he said this, he called out, “Let anyone with ears to hear listen!”
Then his disciples asked him what this parable meant. He said, “To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God; but to others I speak in parables, so that
’looking they may not perceive,
and listening they may not understand.’
Reflect
This morning as I was driving to work, I noticed a rather large weed growing in the curb along one of the busiest sections of the city thoroughfare. At least I think it was a weed. It was almost a foot tall and green and thriving. Taller and greener than anything I ever tried to cultivate in a pot. It was growing out of a crack in the concrete, looking hale and hardy. It had somehow found just the right spot in the concrete, managed to break through and grow, reaching for the sun. It had taken advantage of a found opportunity. Thinking about it, I know it’s just a weed. But that sprig of green figured out how to be something special.
When we have an opportunity to grow, do we take advantage of our opportunities? Do we seek openings to break through and thrive? Even in the most unlikely places, supported by the word of God, empowered by the Holy Spirit, are we reaching for the sunshine of God’s love, even when we feel like a weed?
Pray
Help us, O God, to seek your love and to find our place in the world. May others see us and know you are the sunshine in our lives. You call us to be your disciples; help us look for opportunities to grow and thrive, knowing your love and support. Thanks be to God. Amen.
Go with God.
