Psalm 16 (NRSV)
Protect me, O God, for in you I take refuge.
I say to the LORD, “You are my Lord;
I have no good apart from you.”
As for the holy ones in the land, they are the noble,
in whom is all my delight.
Those who choose another god multiply their sorrows;
their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out
or take their names upon my lips.
The LORD is my chosen portion and my cup;
you hold my lot.
The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;
I have a goodly heritage.
I bless the LORD who gives me counsel;
in the night also my heart instructs me.
I keep the LORD always before me;
because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.
Therefore my heart is glad, and my soul rejoices;
my body also rests secure.
For you do not give me up to Sheol,
or let your faithful one see the Pit.
You show me the path of life.
In your presence there is fullness of joy;
in your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
Reflect
In studying this scripture for today, the footnotes in my Bible remark with the comment that verse 8 shows God’s presence and availability. “I keep the Lord always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.”
The word availability particularly resonates with me due to some recent situations. I needed a doctor appointment, but one was not available for two weeks. I needed to talk with a representative from the phone company, but I had to wait thirty minutes for the next available person. Everyone has to wait; these two examples are nothing new, nothing incredible.
But think how incredible it is that the Maker of the universe is available to us all the time! God is not too busy, not too booked, not too anything to would keep God from being available to us at any time.
Think of your own example of something for which you wait to be available. Mine would be to check out more quickly at the grocery. If I had my own personal clerk, always ready to take my items, I would take advantage of it every time.
Let’s resolve today to take advantage of the availability of our Lord. God is available because God loves us so. Why carry your worries alone? Why experience any kind of emptiness while on this earth? Take everything to the One who is not only available, but wanting to hear from you.
Pray
O God, thank you for never, ever being to too busy to listen and care for me. Amen.
Go with God.
