Psalm 16:2 (NRSV)
I say to the LORD, “You are my Lord;
I have no good apart from you.”
Reflect
I find two beautiful ideas in this sentence. Firstly, how great is it just to lay claim to God? “You are my Lord.” The creator of the universe, the creator of us, loves us so much and is available to us. Calling God our Lord grants us more loving benefits than we will ever fully comprehend or make full use of in a lifetime on this earth—God’s love, salvation, protection, guidance, comfort….
Keeping all those warm, fuzzy benefits in mind, consider the second part of the sentence, “I have no good apart from you.” Whatever is happening in your world on this day, I pray you can hold a little bit of focus on the good in your life. There are certainly times of grieving, and stresses too many to mention. But the good we do enjoy and appreciate certainly comes from God.
Most of us express gratitude for the good in our lives. We say we are thankful for our life, our family, our successes, anything that makes us feel content. But, this sentence from Psalm 16 reminds us to be grateful TO GOD. Our blessings are from our God, the one whose love is right there for us to say, “You are my Lord.”
Pray
O God, what a true blessing for us to know that we are yours. We know that you are mindful and watchful of your children. Amen.
Go with God.
