Galatians 6:7-10 (NRSV)
Do not be deceived; God is not mocked, for you reap whatever you sow. If you sow to your own flesh, you will reap corruption from the flesh; but if you sow to the Spirit, you will reap eternal life from the Spirit. So let us not grow weary in doing what is right, for we will reap at harvest time, if we do not give up. So then, whenever we have an opportunity, let us work for the good of all, and especially for those of the family of faith.
Reflect
I am a results-oriented person. If I begin a project, I will work until it is finished because I enjoying sitting back and seeing the results of my work. Serving God can be both rewarding and frustrating—at the same time. There are always great projects to be done in ministry. You have the opportunity to work with God. You have the opportunity to work through the power of the Spirit. It is humbling to know that God allows and desires us to share in God’s ministry.
However, that same work can be frustrating because we may not always see results from our efforts. In the church too often we get wrapped up in numbers. We begin to show impatience if a ministry does not bring in new people or additional offerings. We get upset if people are not making professions of faith.
Paul reminds us that we are responsible for planting the seed. We are responsible for sowing the Spirit in the world. We may never see the results, but that doesn’t mean the seed isn’t growing. We may never know the change that comes in a person’s life because we shared God with him or her.
Paul assures us that if we do not give up, we will see an eternal reward. We may or may not see our numbers increase. However, if we are working for the good of all, we are rewarded by knowing that we are working with the Creator who gives us eternity.
Pray
God, we are humbled by your desire to work with us and through us. We praise you for the opportunity to share in ministry. Give us the wisdom and the patience to serve with our every breath. Help us to glorify you and not ourselves. Amen.
Go with God.
