Proverbs 2:1-5 (NRSV)
My child, if you accept my words
and treasure up my commandments within you,
making your ear attentive to wisdom
and inclining your heart to understanding;
if you indeed cry out for insight,
and raise your voice for understanding;
if you seek it like silver,
and search for it as for hidden treasures—
then you will understand the fear of the LORD
and find the knowledge of God.
Reflect
You know how it is—you start reading a new book and before long you’re so involved in the story line that you have an idea as to what the main characters look like, you have a notion that the murderer is the lady who keeps showing up uninvited, and you want to tell the heroine to look behind her when she closes the front door after being out after dark! A good thriller has all the ingredients to make you not want to put it down, to read while eating your cereal, to block out the world while at lunch, to stay up too late at night while you will yourself not to read the ending before you get there!
The Bible is full of murder, intrigue, deceit, death, miracles, joy, foreign travel, knowledge, and insights into psychology—everything that would keep us involved in a best-seller. Yet we typically do not spend much time on Bible study…often because we find the wording difficult to understand, or we don’t have a good understanding of the history that came before certain passages to know why a particular verse reads as it does. Yet here in Proverbs we see written: “…if you seek it (God’s word) like silver, then you will…find the knowledge of God.”
God’s word as written in the Holy Bible provides us with all of the instructions we ever need to be successful. Spend some time reading it today.
Pray
Holy God, we do not spend enough time reading the most precious book of all. When we are looking for guidance and answers, help us to search your word for answers. Amen.
Go with God.
