Acts 9:32-35 (NRSV)
Now as Peter went here and there among all the believers, he came down also to the saints living in Lydda. There he found a man named Aeneas, who had been bedridden for eight years, for he was paralyzed. Peter said to him, “Aeneas, Jesus Christ heals you; get up and make your bed!” And immediately he got up. And all the residents of Lydda and Sharon saw him and turned to the Lord.
Reflect
I have always been confused by the statement, “When I saw it, I couldn’t believe it.” Have you ever seen something that made it impossible not to believe? I mean, have you seen something that made you think, “Wow, now that is God working”?
One of the joys I’ve had over the years is going to Colombia, South America, on mission trips to one of our Cumberland Presbyterian campgrounds called El Corro. The last time I went, I saw something that made me turn to God like the residents about whom we read in this scripture.
The caretaker of the camp was climbing a tree to tie a rope around the top so that we could cut it down and clear the land around it to build a new house for his family. When he got about 25-30 feet up, I heard a crack. He fell from the tree and there was little to no sign of life.
His family gathered and we were all praying. A missionary came and began to pray for him. As soon as the missionary touched this man and said, “En el nombre de Dios” (In the name of God), the man gasped for air and his eyes opened. That man lives today, and I will never forget what I saw but had trouble believing. God doesn’t have to show us miracles, but when God does the people who saw the miracle are forever changed. I am thankful for the change that occurred in me.
Pray
God, thank you for showing us your amazing power. Thank you for changing lives generations ago and today. Amen.
Go with God.
