The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures;
he leads me beside still waters;
he restores my soul.
He leads me in right paths
for his name’s sake.

Even though I walk through the darkest valley,
I fear no evil;
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff—
they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD
my whole life long.

Reflect

The words I shall not want ring familiar to people from many different faiths because the Twenty-third Psalm is used so frequently and in a variety of situations. It is commonly used as a funeral scripture, but this morning I find it to be so much more.

This scripture isn’t just about death, it is about life! It is about being content—in your life, in your relationship with God, and in the green pastures as well as the darkest valley. How great it is to know that we serve a living and loving God who provides for us in such amazing ways.

God prepares the table for us, and then anoints us for the Kingdom where we live in God’s grace. Oh, how our cup overflows with traces of God spilling in every direction. Today, no matter what is going on in your life, be content and trust in the ways that God is providing for you. Like any good shepherd, God is providing for you in good and bad times, masterfully maneuvering the terrain with you.

Pray

God, help me to be content in your love and grace. Help me to follow your direction for my life. I hope to praise and worship you in a way that is pleasing to you. Amen.
