Luke 24:36-40 (NRSV)
While they were talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” They were startled and terrified, and thought that they were seeing a ghost. He said to them, “Why are you frightened, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? Look at my hands and my feet; see that it is I myself. Touch me and see; for a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.” And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet.
Reflect
Jesus’s disciples had gathered to try to make sense of the Resurrection and all that had happened. I feel certain that they listened to and shared time and time again the reports of the events of that morning. Then just as they were beginning to wrap their minds around Jesus being alive, Jesus appeared and said, “Peace be with you.” They were terrified, as I would have been! Thoughts and questions would have swirled in my mind: Could this really be Jesus? Jesus died, I know that. How is he here? I confess that I would have reached out to touch Jesus. I would have needed the reassurance that what my eyes were seeing was indeed real.
I have the same doubts in my Christian walk today. Is that really you, Jesus? The calm assurance of Christ fills my doubts with grace. The old hymn says “Even when my faith is small,” trust Jesus. This trust builds faith in Christ, which provides the assurance that Christ is with me—guiding and loving me. The Savior of the world is still loving and available today.
Pray
Jesus, guide me today. Reassure me that you are present today and every day. I again put my trust in your leading and teaching. In your name I pray. Amen.
Go with God.
