Hebrews 12:1-3 (NRSV)
Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God.
Consider him who endured such hostility against himself from sinners, so that you may not grow weary or lose heart.
Reflect
In this passage, the writer of Hebrews compares our spiritual growth as followers of Christ to running a race. As we run our race, a cloud of witnesses cheers us, encouraging us. This cloud of witnesses are all of the saints who have gone before us, those who taught us and showed us by their actions the beautiful gospel of Christ. How wonderful to imagine this cloud of witnesses supporting us, to call them by name, and to draw strength from their examples!
The writer gives us sound guidance for running this race. Let go of what is weighing you down and interfering with your focus on this race. Look to your cloud of witnesses for inspiration and support. Remember that perseverance is key, so make a habit of daily practices, such as prayer, that build perseverance. Look to Jesus as your standard bearer so that you do not grow weary or lose heart.
If nurturing our spirituality is like running a marathon, where are you in the race?
What steps you can take to run this race more swiftly and with perseverance?
Pray
Holy Spirit, fill my heart with your power as I run the race that is set before me and as I strive to become stronger each day in my faith. With Jesus as my standard bearer, help me to persevere when I face obstacles and to run swiftly toward your grace. Amen.
Go with God.
