Luke 13:18-21 (NRSV)
He said therefore, “What is the kingdom of God like? And to what should I compare it? It is like a mustard seed that someone took and sowed in the garden; it grew and became a tree, and the birds of the air made nests in its branches.”
And again he said, “To what should I compare the kingdom of God? It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed in with three measures of flour until all of it was leavened.”
Reflect
In her book, Short Stories by Jesus, Amy-Jill Levine speaks of this wonderful parable that Jesus told. Jesus said that a very small mustard seed can grow into a tree where birds may land and take refuge. Jesus used this example to describe God’s kingdom.
For many people, God’s kingdom has pearly gates and streets of gold. It’s a place far, far from here. However, Jesus called those of us who are his disciples to seek the kingdom here and now, to work with God in building the kingdom in our own back yard!
Amy-Jill reminds her readers that the seed has already been planted. When we pay attention, we can see some pretty amazing things growing and happening. How are you working to build God’s kingdom, where all people are welcome?
Pray
Lord, help us always to see where your kingdom work is happening and be amazed. Amen.
Go with God.
