Acts 9:19b-25 (NRSV)
For several days he [Saul] was with the disciples in Damascus, and immediately he began to proclaim Jesus in the synagogues, saying, “He is the Son of God.” All who heard him were amazed and said, “Is not this the man who made havoc in Jerusalem among those who invoked this name? And has he not come here for the purpose of bringing them bound before the chief priests?” Saul became increasingly more powerful and confounded the Jews who lived in Damascus by proving that Jesus was the Messiah.
After some time had passed, the Jews plotted to kill him, but their plot became known to Saul. They were watching the gates day and night so that they might kill him; but his disciples took him by night and let him down through an opening in the wall, lowering him in a basket.
Reflect
God doesn’t call the qualified; God qualifies the called. This statement is evidenced time and again throughout the Bible, and it brings great comfort to me. God develops the ordinary to extraordinary and lifts the lowly to a place of power.
Not only was Saul not a follower of Christ, he was an aggressive leader in their persecution. Most people would not have thought Saul was even a possibility for showing the light of Christ. However, after the risen Christ quite literally shone his blinding light upon Saul, he saw the error of his ways and the path to righteousness through Christ.
It is comforting to know there is no rule book or mold for being the most effective Christian. The light of Christ shines in many ways, shapes, and forms. God uses everyone and every situation. The most random moments can reveal the most beautiful abilities we have with God’s love.
Pray
Dear Lord, sometimes we feel inadequate. We feel that we are unable to glorify your name and that we are not enough. Thank you for the assurance that we are useful for your plan through your grace and power. Help us to trust you to use our abilities to share your love. Amen.
Go with God.
