Dr. Katie Best Butler, 90, of Camden, Arkansas, died April 08, 2021. Born into the Cumberland Presbyterian family of John Ramsey and Sallie Victoria Butler, Katie grew up in the Fellowship Cumberland Presbyterian Church until she became a charter member of the Camden Cumberland Presbyterian Church when she was sixteen. Both churches are currently in Arkansas Presbytery. She graduated from Fairview High School in Camden before attending Bethel College, later Bethel University, in McKenzie, Tennessee. She earned a master’s from Scarritt College, later Scarritt-Bennett Center, in Nashville, Tennessee and a doctorate from the University of Houston, in Houston, Texas.
Katie served as Director of Christian Education for twelve years in both Cumberland Presbyterian and Presbyterian Denominations, including the First Presbyterian Church in Camden and the First Presbyterian Church, Houston, Texas. She made a career in education administration and care of children aged six-weeks through preschool. Bethel College honored Katie with a Distinguished Service Award in 1992.
Her siblings were Opal Butler Langley, Newton Butler, Joseph Butler, Rev. George Butler (West Tennessee Presbytery), and Juanita Butler Benson who survives.
