Every year, Paducah, Kentucky, holds their Barbecue on the River festival. The event provides a venue for local business and organizations to make sales and raise funds. The Highland Cumberland Presbyterian Church (Covenant Presbytery) in Paducah has taken part for ten years.
For 2020, however, the event was cancelled in June because of continued concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic. Undaunted, the Highland Church will still offer their signature fund-raising item, chocolate dipped slices of key lime pie.
The church started the fund-raiser to fund the upkeep of their cemetery. Member Buddy Rushing explained, “we cleaned up our cemetery, and we put on a new road. Now, we’re getting ready to pave it, and we just have fun doing it.”
The congregation now supports local non-profits like Paducah Cooperative Ministry, Family Service Society, Nate’s Wish, River City Mission, Ladies Living Free, and others. Rushing said, “they need it to keep their organizations going, and if we can help in some small way, well that would go a long way.”
Pies can be pre-ordered by calling the church office at 270-554-3572.
