Charles Edward Sturgeon Jr., 81, of Palm City, Florida, died December 7, 2020. He was a member of the Owensboro, Kentucky, Cumberland Presbyterian Church (Cumberland Presbytery). Known to some variously as Sonny or just Sturg, he was born April 20, 1939, in Owensboro and educated in the public schools there. He competed in football, track, and baseball for Owensboro High School, lettering in all three, and, after graduating, went on to play football for the University in Kentucky. He lettered at UK in 1958, 1959, and 1960. In 1960, he won the WHAS Football Leadership Award, an engraved sterling silver tray and four goblets. As both a halfback and the team’s main punter, Charles led the Wildcats in rushing and punting in 1959 and 1960. In 1959, Charles rushed for 144 yards in the game against Georgia. According to the University of Kentucky athletic office, Charles was drafted by the Denver Broncos in the 10th round of the 1961 NFL draft. However, he declined the draft and moved back to Owensboro, to work at the family dealership, Sturgeon Pontiac.

He is the immediate past-president of the Society of Tennessee Archivists and is best known for his book The History of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Kentucky to 1988 (2000). He has also published on a variety of topics as diverse as The Origin of Marvelman (a British superhero of the 1950s and 1960s), the relative scarcity of East German philatelics, and the biography of British pulp artist, Denis McLoughlin. He is employed by the Ministry Council of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church at the Cumberland Presbyterian Center in Memphis, Tennessee, as editor of the Cumberland Presbyterian Magazine and as publications manager. He has been associated with both Western Kentucky University, which honored him with their James H. Poteet Award, and the University of Kentucky. He also serves as editor for all Boardman Books (Memphis, Tennessee) publications.
