Genesis 6:1-6 (NRSV)
When people began to multiply on the face of the ground, and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that they were fair; and they took wives for themselves of all that they chose. Then the LORD said, “My spirit shall not abide in mortals forever, for they are flesh; their days shall be one hundred twenty years.” The Nephilim were on the earth in those days—and also afterward—when the sons of God went in to the daughters of humans, who bore children to them. These were the heroes that were of old, warriors of renown.
The LORD saw that the wickedness of humankind was great in the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of their hearts was only evil continually. And the LORD was sorry that he had made humankind on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart.
Reflect
This passage of scripture takes my mind immediately to the sins of the flesh. Recently, I watched a commercial (which I rarely do as I’m a big fan of DVR and fast forward) in which shaving for women took what I felt to be a questionable turn. I even asked my husband, “Is that commercial advertising what I think it is?” His simple reply: “Yes.” From commercials with “stripping” candy bars to buxom women selling burgers to television programming that glorifies pleasure over purity, we are a nation doomed just as the Nephilim and the wickedness of mankind for which God grieved.
I sat there wondering why? How has everything in our society become so sexualized? According to the scripture, we aren’t the first to struggle with this phenomenon. Yet, we know that God previously condemned humans for the continual evil in their hearts, and our society still continues to march toward what is racier, bolder, edgier. In this, as in all things, we must seek God’s forgiveness.
Pray
Dear God, as we go throughout our days being bombarded by the fleshly desires of the world, help us to turn to you and your teachings. Help us continue to see the purity of your word and let us cling to that which is right and just. May we not grieve you in our journey. Be well in Christ. Amen.
Go with God.
