Reflect

Many years ago, I attended Bethel College, and later the University of Arkansas, as a music major. The vocal instructors, as well as the choir directors, always stressed blending in with the other singers. Almost all of the choir members were music majors, many of them vocal majors. It was a little tough for each of us to back off and not sing as a soloist. As we sang, we needed to hear those around us singing and make our voices sound almost as one.

In the church community, we have the same challenge—to include others who may not have the same skills or experience as we do, and to help them become accomplished at the task. The saying, “We are only as strong as our weakest link,” very definitely holds true in church work! Encourage others to take part, and be a mentor for those who do not have the knowledge and skills that you may have.

Pray

Loving God, so often we charge on ahead, assuming we are the best person for the job, when there may be others who want to be more involved in serving you through our churches. Give us the sensitivity to recognize this need, and help us to bring out the best in others. Make us humble; give us ears to hear those singing around us so that we can all be part of a better choir. Amen.
