Luke 10:21 (NRSV)
At that same hour Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will.
Reflect
I work for a non-profit agency that provides services to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. I have held a variety of positions in the agency, from direct support professional to program manager to health coordinator to staffing coordinator. I have hired many, many people to work in our agency over the last 24 years. Most of the people have a variety of work experiences that would make them desirable employees. Some people, though, have no experience in our field and their past work experiences do not relate to working with people with disabilities. Some prospective employees really don’t think they will be hired because of their lack of experience, but our agency does not always consider that. A person does not have to be experienced in our field to be kind, empathetic, and have a good work ethic. Sometimes we would rather hire the inexperienced person and train him or her. We would not withhold employment simply because the person lacks experience.
I have found that God treats us the same way with regard to God’s love. We don’t have to be part of an elite group. We don’t have to be pure and spotless. We don’t have to be rich and good looking. God does not withhold God’s truths from us because we do not fit a certain mold. God is accessible to all of us, regardless of our station in life and regardless of our unworthiness. We don’t have to perform feats of strength, have a high IQ, or even be a celebrity. We certainly don’t have to know everything there is to know about the Bible or Christianity. We just need a childlike trust. I am so thankful that experience is not required to receive the love of God, and that God is accessible to ALL of us.
Pray
God of all, thank you for your love and your grace. I am especially thankful that you do not require me to have certain qualifications before I can come to you. You have qualified me through Jesus Christ. It is in the name of Jesus that I pray. Amen.
Go with God.
