Psalm 29 (NRSV)
Ascribe to the LORD, O heavenly beings,
ascribe to the LORD glory and strength.
Ascribe to the LORD the glory of his name;
worship the LORD in holy splendor.
The voice of the LORD is over the waters;
the God of glory thunders,
the LORD, over mighty waters.
The voice of the LORD is powerful;
the voice of the LORD is full of majesty.
The voice of the LORD breaks the cedars;
the LORD breaks the cedars of Lebanon.
He makes Lebanon skip like a calf,
and Sirion like a young wild ox.
The voice of the LORD flashes forth flames of fire.
The voice of the LORD shakes the wilderness;
the LORD shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.
The voice of the LORD causes the oaks to whirl,
and strips the forest bare;
and in his temple all say, “Glory!”
The LORD sits enthroned over the flood;
the LORD sits enthroned as king forever.
May the LORD give strength to his people!
May the LORD bless his people with peace!
Reflect
I was out in the woods when I read the above psalm in preparation for writing these eVotions. It was easy for me to imagine all of nature worshiping God Almighty. As I watched the leaves of oak trees being stripped off by the wind, it was as if the branches were giving praise and dancing unto the Creator. I could envision hills and valleys ringing with praise from all of God’s creatures. I could almost hear the owl hooting praise to the Almighty and the squirrels chattering about the Lord. I could picture the cedars of Lebanon bowing down to the Holy One.
I am a little strange, but I actually enjoy storms rolling into my area. I imagine the lightning as fireworks from God. I see, hear, and feel the power of God in storms—and in all of nature. I can easily picture the loud cracks of thunder being the voice of God. This scripture came alive for me in a different way since I was out in nature as I read it. Try reading the scriptures in different settings and see how alive this Living Word really is!
Pray
Creator God, we give you all praise, honor, and glory. Even the trees, mountains, and valleys lift up praise to you. All that you have created bows down to worship your Mighty, Holy Presence. Let us never fail to acknowledge your living presence. Amen.
Go with God.
