Reflect
Traditions are tricky things. They remind us of pleasant events from the past so that we readily celebrate those events, and they bind us to inertia resulting in an inability to adapt to change when it may be desirable or necessary. Mark’s story of the Pharisees and teachers questioning Jesus about the eating habits of the disciples gives a good example of this. Ceremonial cleansing—washing hands and washing dining utensils—seemed not to be a priority for some of the disciples or Jesus. Challenged by the officials, Jesus reminded them of Isaiah’s words which stated that holding on to traditions created by people resulted in a diluted worship of God. Today, celebrating the birth of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, gives us an opportunity to look closely at traditions compared to Isaiah’s true worship. We’ve always done it this way, or we’ve never done it this way.
Pray
God of time, remind us in our reveries that You have given us the ability to worship You. Remind us that You created us at the beginning of time. We often are distracted by the known and opt for following the known path. Help us to discern between true worship and devotion to tradition.
Go with God.
