20 The word of the Lord came a second time to Haggai on the twenty-fourth day of the month: 21 “Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, saying: I am about to shake the heavens and the earth 22 and to overthrow the throne of kingdoms; I am about to destroy the strength of the kingdoms of the nations and overthrow the chariots and their riders, and the horses and their riders shall fall, every one by the sword of a comrade. 23 On that day, says the Lord of hosts, I will take you, O Zerubbabel my servant, son of Shealtiel, says the Lord, and make you like a signet ring; for I have chosen you, says the Lord of hosts.”
Reflect
Election over.
Things might have broken your way, or not. Maybe we can move forward, or not. Will war keep raging in the east? Will there be a realignment of world powers? Who knows what is going to happen down here in the world’s kingdoms? But, one thing I do know. God is the king of heaven and earth.
Our ultimate destination is not dependent on the powers of the world. Our hope is in God. Throughout history there have been ups and downs and times when God’s faithful people have wondered out loud, “How long, O Lord?”. But even in those times, God was bringing about the plan of redemption in Jesus Christ. When things looked the bleakest for the Israelites, the messiah came.
Take courage and take heart. God is still working, and we look forward to the fulfillment of the promises of Christ, the king’s next return.
Pray
Almighty God, You alone know the beginnings from the end. Help us to put our faith in You, not fearing, but serving in this world. We eagerly await the redemption of this world in Jesus Christ. Amen.
Go with God!
