LEBANON, Tenn. – Bethel Assistant Baseball Coach Nick Thompson was a key member of the Cumberland University 2004 National Championship baseball team. That squad was inducted into the Cumberland University Athletic Hall-of-Fame Friday, October 14, 2022.
Originally from Savannah, Tennessee, Coach Thompson is a 2000 graduate of Hardin County High School where he set many individual pitching records for the Tigers baseball team. After high school, Nick received an offer to play ball for the Atlanta Braves but decided to play for the legendary Coach Jim Painter at Columbia State Community College. At Columbia State, he was 1st team All-State both as a pitcher and shortstop. After two years at Columbia State, he signed to play for Hall of Fame Coach Woody Hunt at Cumberland University. Nick helped lead the team to the school’s first ever, and the state’s first-ever, Baseball National Championship in 2004.
After college, Nick went on to pitch three years for the AZL Cubs, Peoria Chiefs, and Boise Hawks of the Chicago Cubs organization before coming to coach at Bethel. Coach Thompson enters his 16th season with Bethel baseball in 2022-23. During his tenure as pitching coach, Nick has had five players move on to the professional level.
Nick is the son of Richard and Kathy Thompson of Savannah, Tenn. Nick and his wife Lauren reside in McKenzie.
