A Good Soldier of Christ Jesus
2 You then, my child, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus, 2 and what you have heard from me through many witnesses entrust to faithful people who will be able to teach others as well. 3 Share in suffering like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. 4 No one serving in the army gets entangled in everyday affairs; the soldier’s aim is to please the enlisting officer. 5 And in the case of an athlete, no one is crowned without competing according to the rules. 6 It is the farmer who does the work who ought to have the first share of the crops. 7 Think over what I say, for the Lord will give you understanding in all things.
Reflect
Paul here is instructing Timothy in the Christian life. Centuries later, we can still model our lives on these same principles. We are like soldiers, focusing our lives on the one who enlists us, not the daily drama that happens in the news.
In today’s life, it is very easy to get caught up with the things of the world, especially with the strong media that we have these days. We have to keep our focus on the Lord to see what He wants us to do next. If we lose that connection, it is very easy to confuse it with the connection of the world. Just like when one travels outside the range of one’s favorite radio station, the signal gets weaker and weaker, then another station comes into range. Do we really want to listen to the other radio station? It says right here, in this passage, that it will not be an easy road. If we do not follow the rules, then it makes it very easy. However, God has given us rules to follow and in return He gives us his grace, love, and all kinds of other benefits.
Pray
Dear Heavenly Father, we ask that you help us keep our focus on you. That way we can keep doing your work and your will. In your Son’s name, Amen.
Go with God!
