William J. Flanagan, 91, better known as Billy Joe, B.J., or “Red,” of Stuart, Florida, died March 3, 2022. Born August 6, 1930, and raised in Paint Rock, Alabama, Red graduated from Bethel College (now Bethel University) in McKenzie, Tennessee, in 1952. Named “most athletic,” Red played both football and basketball for the Wildcats. Two of Red’s football teammates were the Reverends Bob Hull and Merlyn Alexander. A major contributor to the Bethel athletic department, Red was inducted into the Bethel Athletics Hall-of-Fame in 1996. He met his wife, McKenzie native Mabel Claire James, best known as Marci, at Bethel. She graduated in 1954. Red continued to George Peabody College of Vanderbilt University and made his career in education.
