A Vision of God in the Temple
6 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lofty; and the hem of his robe filled the temple. 2 Seraphs were in attendance above him; each had six wings: with two they covered their faces, and with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. 3 And one called to another and said:
“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts;
the whole earth is full of his glory.”
4 The pivots on the thresholds shook at the voices of those who called, and the house filled with smoke. 5 And I said: “Woe is me! I am lost, for I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips; yet my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!”
Reflect
There are moments in our lives when we get caught up in the holiness and know beyond a shadow of a doubt that God is near. It might be when we watch the sun rise and observe Him painting the sky with living, flowing color. It may be the moment you watch your son or daughter take their first breath, or hold your grandchild for the first time. It could be watching that newborn calf try to stand on his own. Perhaps it’s when you hold hands with the one you love and breathe as one.
In this Scripture, Isaiah, an ordinary man, is caught up in the sights, sounds and smells encompassing the glory of God. Isaiah’s reaction – Woe is me!! And we know…those of us who continue to grasp for Him, longing to be whole . . . we know that if mercy and grace did not go before us, we would be consumed in His holiness. But we discover, as Isaiah did, that mercy arrives way before we get there. Let us be a people who look for and extend mercy in the room today. Mercy has a name – Jesus.

Pray
Father of Mercy, I fall before you, in need of your life, your forgiveness, your grace. I come trusting, believing that you have prepared the way before us today. Help me to look for you at work around me – show me where I may extend mercy to someone who desperately needs to know that you are near. In the name of our merciful Christ. Amen.
