Focus
Let your soul take a moment of rest as you hear God’s word. Put your busy schedule, wandering mind, stressful thoughts, and burdened heart at the feet of the cross and open up to God’s voice as the Giver of Life tends your soul.
Read
6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. 8 He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. 9 The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.
Reflect
Now is the time when we begin to prepare our New Year’s resolutions. Have you already got a couple in mind? Maybe save more money? Pick up a new hobby? Go back to school? I pray that whatever you decide to choose that you will achieve your goal. New year, new you!
I would like to share what I am going to try and focus on in this new year. In studying the Encounter lessons during Advent, a lot of the focus was on John the Baptist. I have been humiliated by his humility. He demonstrated what it meant to be a servant of God. In verse 8 we read, “8 He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light.” He did it well. He could have used his influence to become rich, to become important, or to climb up the religious ranks and become some kind of high priest, but he didn’t. He pointed to Jesus at every chance. He stayed faithful even unto death.
I do not want to die this year, but I do want to pursue servanthood in a greater way. The danger of authentically following Christ, however, is no promise of security. Instead we are commanded to “Pick up our cross and follow.” Who knows where that ends up, but I am going to try my best to pursue Christ.
Pray
Lord, give us the power of the Holy Spirit to overcome our earthly desires so that we can follow you more closely. Amen
