4 While Peter and John were speaking to the people, the priests, the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees came to them, 2 much annoyed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming that in Jesus there is the resurrection of the dead. 3 So they arrested them and put them in custody until the next day, for it was already evening. 4 But many of those who heard the word believed; and they numbered about five thousand.
Reflect
Today there are roughly 2.2 billion Christians in the world, making Christianity the largest world religion. In Acts 4: 1-4 we read that the 2.2 billion Christians that can be found today started with a number as small as 5,000. While these 5,000 did not identify as a Christian the way we do today, they would play a significant roll in the early church’s development alongside Peter, John, Paul, Phoebe, Prisca, Aquila, Timothy, and all the other big names we remember from the Holy Scriptures. I find myself often wondering, “How are my efforts, as one person out of 2.2 billion, going to affect the world?” Then, I remember those who remain nameless in the bible. The 5,000 people who listened and believed what Peter and John taught in the synagogue 2,000 years ago played a pivotal role in the development of Christianity we see today and we have no idea who they were or what role they played. However, there is no arguing that they were active in spreading the Love of God. Today, no matter who you are or where you find yourself you too can play a role in furthering the Kindom of God just as these 5,000 Christians did so long ago.
Pray
Holy God, share with me the calling you have for me today. Help me to remember those who remain nameless in the history of the church and follow in their faithful footsteps, serving where service is needed and doing all I can to work in your name. Amen
Go with God!
