Denton, Texas, 2/16/2021: The Cumberland Presbyterian Children’s Home reports power outages and burst pipes as a result of a winter storm. “Our residents are safe and surviving rolling blackouts well,” a spokesperson stated on Tuesday, February 16, 2021, “our administrative offices have not fared as well. Frozen, broken water pipe has lead to flooding. Repairs could take more than a week based on area demand.”
A winter storm, named Uri by the Weather Channel, struck Texas particularly hard Monday, February 15, 2021. The arctic air which poured into Texas resulted in a record-breaking demand for power causing the state’s electric grid to fail. Utilities planned to use rolling blackouts, but the system was overwhelmed. Two million Texans were without electricity Monday and Dallas area residents were being asked to minimize their use of power.
