Psalm 23
1 The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures;
he leads me beside still waters;
3 he restores my soul.
He leads me in right paths
for his name’s sake.
4 Even though I walk through the darkest valley,
I fear no evil;
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff—
they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord
my whole life long.
Reflect
I am definitely a city boy. I don’t know much about sheep or shepherding except what I see in the movies. I was always told that sheep were not the smartest of animals but I did a little checking and found out if isn’t so. Sheep learn the voice of their shepherd. Because they recognize the voice, they follow where they are led. Sounds easier than herding cats or a bunch of kindergarteners.
So, if God is my shepherd and I am like sheep then I know that if I follow the voice that leads me, I will have what I need. Because the Lord is my Shepherd, I have everything that I need.
One of the hardest lessons to teach a bunch of kindergarteners is the difference between what is a want and what is a need. I am not promised what I want, but what I need. Mom taught that well when she looked something that I didn’t necessarily want but she told me it would keep me from being hungry. That was all I really needed. The shower will make sure I have food, drink and rest. It will definitely be what I need.
Pray
Loving Shepherd, continue to lead me where you will. Make me grateful for the things I have that satisfy my needs. May I learn to balance my life to enjoy the good things you offer.
Go with God!
