Godliness is the theme for 1 Timothy 6:2b-21. Godliness is indeed a tall order as it means to be God-like, pious, devout. Paul taught that we are to be like God not for personal gain but that godliness along with contentment was of terrific gain.
In order to attain a God-like state we must avoid teachings and doctrines that are not Biblically sound. Paul gave clear evidence that these unsound teachings will not foster contentment in our lives.
We must not strive only for material gain forsaking our families, or our church work. We all know those who work so many hours each day that their families are strangers to them. Paul taught that love for money will lead us away from Christ and his teachings.
As we go about our daily lives we need to seek out positive influences that will better enable us to live out our faith. We should strive to be content and seek out others who are also happy in their faith.

- What did Paul teach was the root of all evil? Why do you think he chose that over all the things we consider evil?
- What are those who are rich to do? Would you consider yourself rich in the eyes of most people? Some people?
- What are some negative influences that affect how we live our faith today? How can we guard against them?
- What are the positive influences that affect how we live our faith today?
How Do I Act?
- Make a list of the negative influences in your daily life. Make a list of some of the reasons these have such a hold on you. Reflect on ways you could break the pattern of these influences.
- Make a second list of positive influences. List the reasons these have become influential. Reflect on ways you could reinforce these influences.
- Think about your views on money and your upbringing and how it may have affected your values. Think about ways you can begin influencing your children and those in the church toward good stewardship of all of their resources. Write a plan of action and follow it through.
- Combine these instructions for Timothy with those of the post last week. Keep this list posted on your refrigerator or on your computer where you can see it daily. Pray for these instructions to apply to your life and the lives of family members.
