Psalm 23 New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)
A Psalm of David.
The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures;
he leads me beside still waters;
he restores my soul.
He leads me in right paths
for his name’s sake.
Even though I walk through the darkest valley,
I fear no evil;
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff—
they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord
my whole life long.
Reflect
I distinctly remember memorizing this Psalm when I was in the first grade. I loved the visual parts of it – lying down in green pastures, valleys of shadows, cups running over with goodness. It gave me comfort then and it still gives me comfort and peace today. I can imagine nothing more peaceful lying on soft grass with my eyes closed, next to the still waters of a lake, feeling a warm summer breeze across my face, listening to the birds in the trees, calling to one another, as I think about the wonders of God and everything created by God. We lead such busy lives in the 21st century. Our children are very active outside the home, we have many interests ourselves, plus jobs and school. It’s so important for us to stop and take the time to lie down in the grass next to the still water and be still ourselves. Listen and feel God around us, reflecting on the mighty acts of God’s hand around us. For just a few minutes each day, think of the peace of God and enjoy it.
Pray
Almighty God, you are the peace that passes all understanding. Let us slow down for a minute to remember that. Let us stop and know that you are GOD. With peace and humbleness we pray, Amen.
Go with God!
