Hebrews 11:23-28 New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)
By faith Moses was hidden by his parents for three months after his birth, because they saw that the child was beautiful; and they were not afraid of the king’s edict. By faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called a son of Pharaoh’s daughter, choosing rather to share ill-treatment with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. He considered abuse suffered for the Christ to be greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking ahead to the reward. By faith he left Egypt, unafraid of the king’s anger; for he persevered as though he saw him who is invisible. By faith he kept the Passover and the sprinkling of blood, so that the destroyer of the firstborn would not touch the firstborn of Israel.
Reflect
We like to talk about faith a lot, but what is faith really? How would you explain what faith is to someone? I think our faith has everything to do with our response to God. Additionally, it goes beyond what we simply profess; it involves especially what we do. God calls us to do things, and we decide how we respond. Sometimes, we have a negative response to God, and we don’t do whatever it is God has asked. But at other times, we do. Something about our belief in God ends up being strong enough to push us and influence what we decide to do. That positive response is evidence of faith.
In today’s text, the author mentions actions that Moses and his family were led to do by their faith. As people of faith, we strive to follow God’s call. When we respond positively to God’s call and practice our faith, we can easily find ourselves led into all kinds of situations that we wouldn’t have wandered into otherwise. What are some things your faith has led you to do? Are there any places or situations you’ve found yourself in because of your faith? We can’t always predict where our faith will lead us, but I hope you can trust in God enough to know that, wherever your faith takes you, God goes with you, and God works for your good.
Pray
Loving God, help us to live boldly in our faith. Continue to be faithful to Your promises, and renew our trust that You are who You say You are, and You’ll do what You say You’ll do. May we act to support one another and to remind one another of Your goodness and Your faithfulness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
