The Reverend Thomas Clarence Johnson, 80, best known as Tommy, (Grace Presbytery) died December 30, 2019.

Born in Quincy, Florida, May 12, 1939, to W.N. Johnson and Clara Burke, Tommy attended Greensboro Elementary, Gadsden Junior High, and Gadsden High School. After high school, Tommy went to Jefferson State Junior College in Birmingham, Alabama, and served for three years in the United States Army. He participated in the Cumberland Presbyterian Home Study Course for ministerial students before entering Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, where he earned his Masters Degree in Theology.

He married Barbara Colvin December 22, 1961. Together they had three children, Tammy Lynn, Thomas, and Rachel.

Tommy was baptized in May 1959, by the Rev. A.C. Quarterman and joined the New Philadelphia Presbyterian Church`(now PCA) in Quincy, Florida. In March 1965, Tommy transferred his membership to the Elliottsville Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Alabaster, Alabama. In 1966, he came under the care of Birmingham Presbytery. He was licensed in the spring of 1973 and ordained in the fall. The Rev. Roy Hall preached Tommy’s ordination sermon and the Rev. Dale Watts delivered the charge.

Besides Birmingham Presbytery, Tommy ministered in Gadsden, New Hope, and Grace Presbyteries. He preached at Elliottsville before being called as associate pastor of Hopewell in Bessemer, Alabama. He served as pastor of Forrest Avenue (Gadsden, Alabama), Enon (Ackerman, Mississippi), and Helena (Alabama).

Tommy served as pastor of Helena Cumberland Presbyterian Church for many years. He also served as a chaplain with the Shelby County (Alabama) Sheriff’s Department and the Helena Police Department.

His favorite pastimes included spending time with Barbara and their family, watching Alabama Crimson Tide football, and playing golf.
