Built in 1831 as a Methodist Church, this structure in downtown Clarksville, Tennessee, became the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Located at the corner of Fourth and Main streets in downtown Clarksville, the building has since been a residential rental property for more than 130 years. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Developer Robert E. White bought the structure in January of 2018 and claimed his intention was restoration. Claiming the building to be in greater disrepair than he realized, White then applied for a demolition permit.
The Regional Historic Zoning Commission, which is responsible for preserving and protecting the historic and/or architectural value of the structures within the Clarksville Main Street historic district, voted in August 2019 to deny White’s application. On Thursday, October 3, 2019, the Clarksville City Council in a 9-1 vote, with three abstentions, overruled the Regional Historic Zoning Commission.
