Matthew 20:29-34 New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)
As they were leaving Jericho, a large crowd followed him. There were two blind men sitting by the roadside. When they heard that Jesus was passing by, they shouted, “Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David!” The crowd sternly ordered them to be quiet; but they shouted even more loudly, “Have mercy on us, Lord, Son of David!” Jesus stood still and called them, saying, “What do you want me to do for you?” They said to him, “Lord, let our eyes be opened.” Moved with compassion, Jesus touched their eyes. Immediately they regained their sight and followed him.
Reflect
Two men, possibly blind from birth, were sitting begging from the passing crowd. The people were singing and talking making merry was they went. This was the holiday of freedom, Passover. Someone told the men that Jesus was close by. They began to shout loudly to be heard over the din of the crowd. “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!”, was the declaration of belief that he was the Messiah.
Their persistence got Jesus’s attention. The criticism of the crowd revealed they were more interested in basking in the glory of Jesus than showing compassion to their fellow man. Jesus’s question was for them to declare their desire – money or sight. Jesus’s great power was to give mercy and compassion to others rather than using the power for himself. Are we blind to the misery of others? Our spiritual blindness is worse than physical blindness. It causes more damage to others. Are we selfish in the glory of Christ and what we can get, or interested in the misery of others who are indeed of physical and spiritual compassion? These are questions we can only ask ourselves as we evaluate our walk with Christ.
Pray
Heavenly Father, Creator and our Salvation, forgive me If I become selfish and insensitive to the needs of others. Open my eyes that I will see with discernment, mercy, and compassion, so that others can be joyful in the power of Christ. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
Go with God!
