Psalm 23 New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)
The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures;
he leads me beside still waters;
he restores my soul.
He leads me in right paths
for his name’s sake.
Even though I walk through the darkest valley,
I fear no evil;
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff—
they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord
my whole life long.
Reflect
What is not to love about Psalm 23? The LORD is our shepherd, guiding, comforting, and providing restoration. We have nothing to fear, the LORD is always with us and He provides overflowing blessings for us.
I always think of a teacup when I read this Psalm. I see an image of the LORD’s blessings overflowing the cup, running over the rim, filling the saucer, and pouring out on the table. Amid trials and tribulation, it can be easy to forget just how very blessed I am. The “woe is me” attitude can quickly bog me down in self-pity. But when I think about Psalm 23, even amid those tough times, I recall the ongoing blessings the LORD abundantly pours out on me. His love for me, His provision for my daily needs, access to His word, a community of believers, material things, the list is endless. Even amid the darkest valley, I can trust that Gods’ goodness and love are with me. The blessings always outweigh the burden. His word promises it. I have seen it again and again in my life. He is faithful and true and as a believer, I will dwell in his house forever. I am so very blessed!
Pray
LORD, You are my shepherd. You provide for my every need. You walk alongside me and comfort me. I have nothing to fear. Thank you for the abundant blessings you pour out on me. Thank you that I have a place in your house forever. May I walk confidently with you today.
Go with God!
