Psalm 8 (NRSV)
O LORD, our Sovereign,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory above the heavens.
Out of the mouths of babes and infants
you have founded a bulwark because of your foes,
to silence the enemy and the avenger.
When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars that you have established;
what are human beings that you are mindful of them,
mortals that you care for them?
Yet you have made them a little lower than God,
and crowned them with glory and honor.
You have given them dominion over the works of your hands;
you have put all things under their feet,
all sheep and oxen,
and also the beasts of the field,
the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea,
whatever passes along the paths of the seas.
O LORD, our Sovereign,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
Reflect
Growing up in the country there were no tall building s or street lights to block the sky on a clear night.
On a warm summer night we children would often lie on a blanket in the yard and try to imagine how God made the moon and all the stars with each looking different. We liked to be first to find the “Big Dipper” or “Milky Way.” It boggles my mind to think about the universe and the power that holds it all in orbit with precision.
Through the years I have continued to be in awe of God’s gifts in nature. I feel fortunate to live in an area where we have changing seasons. This time of year we are looking forward to the color changes in the leaves. The mountains are beautiful and I sometimes have concerns that we worship the creation rather than the Creator.
Pray
O God, we are grateful for the beauty of your creation. Guide us as we care for the environment and help us to have a renewed love for you and all of the human race. Amen.
Go with God!
