Genesis 21:1-7 (NRSV)
The LORD dealt with Sarah as he had said, and the LORD did for Sarah as he had promised. Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the time of which God had spoken to him. Abraham gave the name Isaac to his son whom Sarah bore him. And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac when he was eight days old, as God had commanded him. Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him. Now Sarah said, “God has brought laughter for me; everyone who hears will laugh with me.” And she said, “Who would ever have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.”
Reflect
“You’ve got to be kidding me!” We have all heard and expressed that sentiment at one time or another, especially when something totally surprising and unexpected occurs. “No way! It can’t be!”
Years ago, I heard a husband and wife, prominent in our denomination, laughing about how Genesis 21:1-7 was a favorite scripture of theirs because after several years of marriage, they had pretty much given up hope on having children. Then their first was born, and a few years later, their second child. In their relative “old age”—probably late thirties or early forties—along came their children!
Do not EVER say that God doesn’t have a sense of humor! God is full of surprises. They may not be like the above experiences, but God will still surprise you. You have given up on finding a marriage partner—and then it happens! You are pessimistic about your church—and then good things begin to occur.
We worship a God of unexpected, unanticipated, yes, and undeserved blessings. The old adage, “Nothing is impossible with God” may be used too much and is not believed any more. But on the other hand, keep in mind: God does have a sense of humor!
Pray
Dear God, we do not often, if at all, approach your altar in prayer while laughing. Remind us that it is okay, because you are full of surprises! Amen.
Go with God.
