Psalm 1 (NRSV)
Happy are those
who do not follow the advice of the wicked,
or take the path that sinners tread,
or sit in the seat of scoffers;
but their delight is in the law of the LORD,
and on his law they meditate day and night.
They are like trees
planted by streams of water,
which yield their fruit in its season,
and their leaves do not wither.
In all that they do, they prosper.
The wicked are not so,
but are like chaff that the wind drives away.
Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous;
for the LORD watches over the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked will perish.
Reflect
Robert Frost’s famous poem “The Road Not Taken” is a beautiful illustration of the paths we choose to take in life. The path that is worn can look more promising and comfortable, whereas the other path causes hesitation. If forced to choose one path for the rest of your life, no changing your mind, many of us would choose the path that is more worn because it feels safer. Taking that path would ease anxiety, thinking that so many before had chosen it.
Thankfully, we can change the path we are following. Many times we will find ourselves choosing the path of worldly things, but we do not have to stay there. The path following Christ will not be easy, but it is the path that makes all of the difference in the world. May we go forth choosing to mediate, delight, and journey on the path that leads to Christ.
Pray
Gracious God, you are constantly calling us to you. Help us to be better hearers of your voice and your callings. Amen
