Matthew 18:1-5 (NRSV)
At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” He called a child, whom he put among them, and said, “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever becomes humble like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.
Reflect
Fall is here and with it, for some of us, the thrill of college football—games, tailgate parties, and rooting for our team. The thrill of competition is so exciting with each team striving to be the best.
Just as it is easy to get caught up in the competition of having the best team, some churches think they need to have the biggest or best church or ministry or the coolest youth group. When we think we are the best, we often don’t think there is anything we can still learn or any changes we need to make. But we must always be willing to learn, to be teachable like a child.
Pray
Dear Lord, thank you for the example of children that helps me understand that I still have learning to do. Let my mind be open to your teachings. Amen.
Go with God.
