Psalm 29 (NRSV)
Ascribe to the LORD, O heavenly beings,
ascribe to the LORD glory and strength.
Ascribe to the LORD the glory of his name;
worship the LORD in holy splendor.
The voice of the LORD is over the waters;
the God of glory thunders,
the LORD, over mighty waters.
The voice of the LORD is powerful;
the voice of the LORD is full of majesty.
The voice of the LORD breaks the cedars;
the LORD breaks the cedars of Lebanon.
He makes Lebanon skip like a calf,
and Sirion like a young wild ox.
The voice of the LORD flashes forth flames of fire.
The voice of the LORD shakes the wilderness;
the LORD shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.
The voice of the LORD causes the oaks to whirl,
and strips the forest bare;
and in his temple all say, “Glory!”
The LORD sits enthroned over the flood;
the LORD sits enthroned as king forever.
May the LORD give strength to his people!
May the LORD bless his people with peace!
Reflect
Growing up near Lexington Kentucky, I got used to seeing horse farms. Anytime we went to Lexington, we’d drive by them and see the beautiful stables, the perfect fences, and the lush grass. In the middle of it all stood pristine thoroughbreds, horses that were born to run.
I remember driving by one time and seeing a colt at one end of a field. All of the sudden, the colt felt an urgency to go to the other end of the field. So he bolted off, running as fast as he could go. When he got there, he must have remembered how great the other end was, so he bolted right back. It was beautiful to watch. You could tell, too, that the animal was happy. He was running because he was made to run. It was almost as if the colt were skipping, like a calf at Lebanon.
I want us to skip like that. I hope to see everyone dance or sing or work in such a way that it lightens the world by sharing the pure joy that we were created. How can you skip today, out of pure joy? Find a way, and skip to the glory of God.
Pray
God of joy, you are worthy of our skipping—in whatever way we do it. When we see you moving in the world, it moves us to joy. So, please Lord, open our eyes so that we may see, in every moment, your presence. Cause in us a stirring, and then give us strength to skip away. Amen.
Go with God.
