The Reverend Roosevelt Baugh died February 19, 2022. Roosevelt was an honorably retired member of Red River Presbytery and the former pastor of St. Mark Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Fort Worth, Texas.
Roosevelt was born June 8, 1936, in Huntsville, Alabama, to Robert Lee Baugh and Clara Louise Cook. Long before his call to the ministry, his family nicknamed him “Preacher.” When Roosevelt was thirteen, the Baugh family moved to Nashville, Tennessee, where Roosevelt was educated in the public schools. He joined the US Marine Corp and served for four years before joining the US Navy.
After leaving the navy, Roosevelt returned to Huntsville where he answered the call to ministry. On April 9, 1966, he ·was ordained by the Huntsville Presbyte1y of the Second Cumberland Presbyterian Church, now known as the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in America (CPCA).
After ordination, Roosevelt returned to Nashville where he was introduced to Ruth Doaks by her cousin, the Reverend James Nance. Ruth played piano and was the daughter of a Cumberland Presbyterian minister. February 18, 1967, they were married.
Roosevelt served the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in America in a number of roles. He was pastor of Queen’s Temple CPCA (New Hopewell Presbytery) in McKenzie, Tennessee, and later pastor of Mt Tabor CPCA (New Hopewell Presbytery) in Jackson, Tennessee. He served as moderator of New Hopewell Presbyte1y and moderator of the General Assembly of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in America in 1981-82. He served on the Joint Committee on Cooperative Work, on the Judiciary Committee, and on the Committee to Revise the Confession of Faith.
In 1985, on the advice of then CPCA General Assembly moderator the Reverend Robert S. Wood, Roosevelt accepted the call to St. Mark Cumberland Presbyterian Church (North Central Texas Presbytery) in Fort Worth, Texas, after the resignation of the Reverend Brown C. Welch. Roosevelt was received by North Central Texas Presbytery April 28, 1985, at a meeting called for that purpose at St. Luke Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
A presbyterial commission consisting of the Reverends Larry Blakeburn, Dwight L. Wagner, and Betty Youngman with elder Michael Shelton installed Roosevelt as pastor of St. Mark on May 26, 1985. Dwight Wagner, moderator of the presbytery, presided. Betty Youngman preached the installation sermon. Michael Shelton put the questions to the congregation and to the pastor. Larry Blakeburn gave the charge. Roosevelt served St. Mark until his retirement in October 2021.
In the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Roosevelt served on several committees. He served as vice-moderator of the General Assembly of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in 2002.
